hoast is an artist-run space in Vienna, founded in 2017 by artists Wolfgang Obermair and Ekaterina Shapiro-Obermair. Its curatorial program connects local and international art scenes with a particular focus on artistic positions from Central, Southern, and Eastern Europe—a geographic emphasis rooted in Vienna’s geopolitical location.

For TRYST, hoast invited a group of artists who currently run, or have previously run, independent art spaces in Vienna. The selection reflects the vibrant scene of such platforms in Austria, made possible above all by individuals with the vision and energy to develop alternative models for presenting contemporary art, but also by a local political environment that recognizes the value of these initiatives. However, rather than presenting the spaces themselves, the exhibition emphasizes the artists behind them, exploring the relationship between their individual artistic practices and their engagement as artist-curators. Beyond their role as social actors, their works remain concerned with questions of form and materiality.
